The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is an independent, international, non-governmental, and non-profit organization established in 1947. It represents 164 national standardization bodies worldwide. The primary function of ISO is to develop voluntary, consensus-based, and market-oriented international standards. The headquarters of ISO is in Geneva, Switzerland.
ISO standards ensure the safety, reliability, and quality of products and services. They serve as strategic tools for businesses, helping to increase production capacity and provide competitive services by minimizing production costs, using resources more economically and efficiently, and reducing environmental impact. This approach, in turn, facilitates access to new markets, promotes fair and free global trade, and offers equal economic development opportunities for all countries by eliminating technical trade barriers. To date, ISO has developed 22,447 international standards.
The Republic of Azerbaijan has been a full member of ISO since July 7, 2003, through the State Committee for Standardization, Metrology, and Patents (known as the State Agency for Standardization, Metrology, and Patents from 2003 to 2008).
Additionally, Azerbaijani experts participate in 14 ISO Technical Committees as both observers and full members.
The Azerbaijan Standardization Institute has been a full member of ISO since December 2017.
